W as it because the day we got there gave us a huge thunderstorm? No. I had a new canopy and an effective rain fly. Our site was well covered and overlooked the beautiful blue river.
Was it because the nearest vault toilet was out of commission? No. Walking a little further equals burning calories.
Here was the problem: all night every night, probably two to five times and hour, flights flew right overhead, piercing even the sound of the roaring, calming river. I was woken up probably 8-10 times each night. And if I didn’t wake up, then my dog would growl and that woke me up. But mostly, it was the planes. Sleeping well while camping is not something I ever expect but this was something else.
And it wasn’t the faint, off in the distance commerical flight. It was WHISHSHHSHOSHSHHS RUMBLE RUMBLE
Oh well. I’m going back to St. Helen s next year.

Nothing worse than the serenity of nature being interrupted by the reminder that there’s really nowhere secluded left in North America*.

they are easy enough to find but you typically have to go where most people aren't ever going to go... even for Instagram.

Add New Mexico to that list. There’s an whole lot of Western NM in which you can put some serious distance between you and the nearest living human.

Should have gone to easternmost Washington state. There are far fewer people there.

Funny, I find that I often sleep better while camping than in any hotel room for sure. I can sleep a little better in my own bed at home, but if I'm camping more than a night or two and the weather is good, it becomes about the same. Something about cooler night Temps, getting to bed early because there's nothing to do in the dark anyways, and naturally waking up rather than using an alarm is a very good sleep. I generally sleep relatively lightly while camping but it's restful nonetheless. But yeah noises piss me off to no end in campgrounds. Especially barking dogs, cackling drunk people, children running around wildly, and then crap like you experienced which is unfortunate. It's why I love remote campgrounds that I have to hoof it to rather than drive there. Usually avoids all of those problems! Except then you have new problems like filtering your water, pooping in a bag, and eating dried crap meals.

There are dark and quiet maps, a0parently north central wa and the olympic coast are the least polluted by light and noise.

Ugh, that sucks! My backpacking trip was a bit busier than expected because the weather was good for summiting Glacier Peak, but at least we found isolated campsites and the trail was quiet overall.
